Bush gives $10,000 from personal funds for tsunami relief
What a generous man!
According to the story, Bush is worth $13,000,000. He's donating $10,000 from his pocket. That's 1/1300th of his net worth, or 0.08%.
Okay. Let's say you own a $150,000 house and a $30,000 car. You also own everything in the house, too. We'll estimate your net worth at $250,000. How much money should you donate to be as warm-hearted and generous as your President? What's 0.08% of $250,000?
192 bucks.
CALL THE PAPERS! YOU JUST DONATED ONE OR TWO DAY'S WAGES!!!
What a fucking putz. This is news? Even if this guy were a pauper the day he was sworn in, he's living for free at the Whitehouse for eight years and earning (you can't hear the sarcasm when I say "earning" but it's there) $400,000 each year. Assuming he keeps it in his sock rather than investing it, he'll walk out of there $3.2 million dollars richer than when he started. 3.2 million bucks. I won't see 3.2 thousand bucks all in one lump in my lifetime.
Hmm. Forget that he's a multimillionaire. Let's just focus on that $400,000/year because it'll make him look more generous. He's donating $10,000, or 1/40 of his annual salary. Remember, he doesn't spend a dime of that 400K while he's sitting in the Oval Office. 1/40 is the equivalent of six working days (plus a two-hour shift if you want to be picky). A week and a half.
CALL THE PAPERS! THAT'S LIKE A CAR PAYMENT TO YOU AND ME!!!
AND MAYBE A STEAK BARBECUE!!!
!!
Did I use the "fucking putz" line already?
This is not news. It's a joke. Yay. He donated. Kudos to him. Really. It's a nice thing to do, and I'm not being sarcastic when I say so. But half of the people you know donated more than 1/1300 of their net worth to tsunami relief. Did they get in the papers? Shit, no!
Bush's piss is worth more than $10,000. "Here you go, Sri Lanka. Have a warm cup of my piss. Rebuild a road with it, or something. Dick says hi, too, by the way. He sends a coiler."

Using percentage of net worth to compare or rate donations makes no sense. If your house burned down and your computer along with all your other worldly goods were destroyed and your internet connection to Worth1000 was lost you'd be devasted.
If Warren Buffet gave you $10,000 or a mere .0000001% of his net worth
and
Some Joe Schmoe gave you $500 or 80% of his net worth
which will be more helpful to you? Sure you may think more of the second guy's generosity but the first one's donation was *much* more helpful to you.
Of course the sad thing is I would assume that far more than 50% of the donations are not going to the victims but to the overhead of the organizations including their multi-million-dollar salarys for their chairpersons and various assorted logistic overhead items that are screaming for more money and berating the US for not giving more.
